The Tenebrae Service, or Service of Shadows, is a service of lament that recalls the suffering and death of Christ. Traditionally held on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, or Holy Saturday, a Tenebrae service focuses on readings from the Gospels that recall Jesus' passion and death, and includes the gradual extinguishing of light and a loud noise at the conclusion of the service (the "strepitus"). Worshippers leave the service in darkness and silence, which is a reminder of God's sacrificial love and the pain of Christ, and which also creates a sense of profound anticipation for the coming of Easter morning.
